Case Study: Atlas Coal Mine – Static Shelving for Historical Artifact Storage

Westbow Systems

Preserving history requires thoughtful solutions to protect artifacts while respecting the unique constraints of heritage sites. At Atlas Coal Mine, a National Historic Site in Alberta, this challenge came to the forefront during a project to design static shelving for artifact storage. The solution needed to fit unconventional spaces, avoid any structural damage, and align with the site's industrial character.

The Challenge

Atlas Coal Mine presented several challenges for artifact storage:

  • Unique Spaces: Artifacts needed to be stored in unconventional areas like closets, bathtubs, and other unique spaces.

  • Preservation Restrictions: Anchoring shelving into walls or floors was prohibited to protect the historical structure.

  • Coal Dust and Aesthetic Concerns: Shelving needed to be practical while blending with the industrial heritage and hiding coal dust.

  • Weight Distribution: The design required careful weight distribution to prevent damage to fragile historic floors.

Finding a balance between functionality, preservation, and aesthetics was critical.

The Solution

To address these challenges, Atlas Coal Mine partnered with Westbow Systems to create a custom shelving solution tailored to the site’s needs. Key elements of the design included:

  1. Custom Static Shelving: Heavy-duty shelving was designed to fit into unconventional spaces like bathtubs and closets, maximizing storage efficiency without altering the structure.

  2. Obsidian Finish: The shelving was finished in an obsidian color to blend with the industrial setting and effectively conceal coal dust.

  3. Freestanding Design: Shelving was engineered to remain stable without anchoring, meeting preservation requirements and ensuring no damage to the historic walls or floors.

  4. Weight Distribution: The shelving design prioritized even weight distribution to protect fragile flooring from strain or damage.

This thoughtful design ensured both the safety of the artifacts and the protection of the site's historical structure.

The Outcome

The static shelving system successfully addressed all project requirements:

  • Artifact Safety: Provided secure, stable storage for valuable artifacts.

  • Historical Integrity: Preserved the structure with a non-invasive freestanding design.

  • Aesthetic Alignment: The shelving’s obsidian finish complemented the site's industrial heritage while minimizing the visual impact of coal dust.

This solution balanced functionality and preservation, ensuring the site and its artifacts remain protected for years to come.
